How to Find Bases on DonutSMP (Legit Methods Only)

Base hunting is half the game on DonutSMP. This guide covers the legit methods hunters actually use to find bases and stashes, no cheats, no xray, and the same knowledge flipped around so you can keep your own base invisible.

How bases actually get found

Almost nobody finds a base by randomly digging. Bases get found because they leave traces: a surface entrance, a trail of broken blocks, a lit cave system visible from above at night, or a nether tunnel that leads straight to a portal. Understanding the traces is what makes you a better hunter and a harder target.

The other big factor is distance. Most players build within a few thousand blocks of spawn or of a nether highway exit, so hunters concentrate their searching in those bands instead of covering the whole world.

Elytra scouting patterns

  • Fly low and slow at night: light sources like torches, furnaces and glowstone give away player activity from far away.
  • Search in a grid or spiral around spawn, nether portals and highways instead of flying random lines.
  • Watch for unnatural terrain: flat patches, fresh tree farms, floating blocks and smoothed mountains are player-made.
  • Check under oceans and rivers only when you have a reason; deep underwater bases leave almost no surface trace and are rarely worth blind searching.

Nether highways and portals

Every overworld base that uses the nether has a portal, and portals cluster near highways. Hunters fly highway branches and check every side tunnel, since a tunnel that ends abruptly in the wall usually means someone dug onward on the other side.

If you're the one hiding: never connect your base portal directly to a highway. Go several hundred blocks off the highway, through a tunnel with no straight sightline, and break the path behind you.

Following players

The oldest method in the book: watch where geared players fly. Someone leaving spawn with full inventory and rockets is heading somewhere worth remembering. Patient hunters trail at a distance, note the direction, and search that sector later.

Counter it the same way you'd counter any tail: never fly a straight line home, add a fake stop, and check your render before approaching your own entrance.

What is not allowed

Xray texture packs, cave finder mods, chunk exploit tools and anything that reveals blocks or bases through walls are cheats on DonutSMP and can get you banned. Everything in this guide is normal gameplay: flying, watching, listening and following. If a method needs a modified client to work, skip it.

Keep your own base unfound

  1. Build far from spawn and far from highway exits, distance beats camouflage.
  2. No surface entrance, no surface lighting, no farms visible from the sky.
  3. Never fly a straight line from spawn or a portal to your base.
  4. Keep your stash separate from your main base so one discovery doesn't cost you everything.
  5. Use a hidden stash for your best gear, our stash schematics are built exactly for this.
